Cash, Credit Cards (inc American Express)The World-Famous Cavern Club where The Beatles made their name! Even though this isn’t the original Cavern Club, it is a mecca for fans of the Fab Four from all over the world, and no matter what time of day or night you head down to Mathew Street, you’ll find the steps down to the cavernous cellar club packed, and it’s always party time down there.
The Vibe
Mathew Street is tourist central. The bars and pubs along this street are busy every single hour, of every single day, of every single week. It wouldn’t surprise us to hear a bar full of people singing Summer of 69 back to a live band, in SGT Peppers on Christmas Day during the Queen’s Speech (who wants to listen to that crap anyway – ban the Monarchy!). The centrepiece of Mathew Street is The Cavern Club, famous everywhere for being the Liverpool venue where The Beatles made their name. Even though it is a tourist trap, it is a really good time, and whenever TiL has guests from out of town, we always take them to The Cavern. No matter how cool you think you are, everyone loves it down there, getting a photo op with the signage on the stairs down, singing along with the covers bands on in the cavernous bar, or looking at all the different trinkets and memorabilia of the original Cavern Club’s proud history.
Many critically-acclaimed artists have come and played at this new Cavern over the years, and it is still a place where celebrities flock to try and find that spark, that little bit of magic from 60 years ago. Even those who aren’t that fussed on The Beatles (we don’t honestly believe that is possible) can relate to just letting your hair down and having a great time – The Cavern, and Mathew Street in general is the place in town where you can go for a late night party, and it’s really safe too because you’ve got a great mixture of tourists, older people, families, and for some reason people from over the water make Mathew Street their big night out when they make the trek from the Wirral.
The Price
It used to be free to get into The Cavern, then they started charging after a certain time, and now we’re pretty sure you pay all the time. There are different grades of pricing for entry, depending on what day of the week it is, and what time of day, but if you are a first time visitor in Liverpool, whether you like The Beatles or not, we would recommend you take a look and spend an hour singing along to some cold stone classics.
