Cash & All Major Credit CardsAfter opening up on Smithdown Place out in Allerton back in 2012, the Neon Jamon team put together a fine establishment, promoting the best of Catalan cuisine and culture. The idea behind simple and tasty tapas, wine, and cava, was inspired, and since opening another restaurant on Berry Street it has gone from strength to strength.
The Vibe
The great food and service has remained throughout both venues, but the bigger Berry Street restaurant is much more open and caters for larger groups of diners. Just before the Chinese Arch and on the edge of Chinatown the large windows and clean views make Neon Jamon a very enticing prospect for anyone walking past (just make sure that you don’t end up sitting directly in the sun during the summer months – we once made that mistake and spent the whole meal sweating and fussing). The upstairs provides even more seating, which means that no matter how busy or what time of day you go, the staff are likely to be able to find you a table if you are willing to wait a little. The bar area is comfortable and the staff polite anyway, so it is never too much hassle to wait with a drink.
The Food
Since Neon Jamon changed its menu, we’ve definitely noticed a difference in the portion sizes. The last time we went we ordered pretty much the same few dishes as the time before that, but got nowhere near finishing the meal – they’ve increased their portion sizes! This is unheard of in most restaurants, and the same delicious Catalan-inspired food was served. The menu is split between the nibbles, bread, charcuteria, cheese, meats, garden, fish, eggs and potato, and dessert. It’s nice to try and get a wide sample, with a dish from every section if you are sharing with your table. The dishes we seriously LOVE are the following. Some padron peppers and pan con tomate to start, with a plate of Manchego cheese and quince jelly next. From there we would order the straw fries and eggs with added chorizo (which has a good claim to best dish in any Liverpool restaurant!), the chicken pintxos (chargrilled paprika chicken on skewers), the salt cod croquetas, and the albondigas. If you’ve got the room, always order the churros to finish the night like a king.
The Price
The lunchtime offer at Neon Jamon is a great way to try some of the dishes that you’ve always wanted to try. Monday to Friday between 12pm and 5pm, you can get two dishes for £12 on selected dishes. On the main menu, the bites and bread are all priced around £3 to £6, with pretty much the vast majority of all the other dishes priced between £6 and £9, with some bigger boards pricier but full of produce.
