We love Greek food here at TiL, and we’re always on the lookout for new Greek restaurants that are as authentic as possible. We’ve spent a lot of time in Greece eating Souvlaki, and it can be difficult to find anything that matches up to the real thing in the UK. There are a few exceptions of course, and with the opening of Greek Taverna on Bold Street we’ve found a good example of how delicious Greek food can be when it is kept simple.

The Vibe

It’s all a bit too blue and white (like the Greek flag, so we know what they’re doing) isn’t it? The signage outside, and the décor inside does feel like they’ve gone that little bit too far to make you feel like you’re on holiday in Greece, except it feels a bit more package holiday dining room, with fancy glassware, than Greek taverna. It’s a shame really, as the food and service is good, although we would say the restaurant is very clean, tidy, and welcoming. The waiting staff went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed when we last visited, chatting to us in that entertaining, familiar way that the best Scousers and Greek people can get away with. The whole place was very clean and tidy, and that goes a long way to creating a comfortable dining experience.

The Food

The food is good, but not great, with all the staple things you expect to see on a Greek menu. Everything we’ve tried at Greek Taverna has been very tasty, and there is a good range of Meze and starters to share with your table and classic Greek mains. The beauty of Greek food is that you can order loads of starters to share with the table and it provides a convivial atmosphere that makes an event of dinner time. Our favourite approach is to order some warm pitta bread with tzatziki, a Greek salad, dolmades (the tasty stuffed vine leaves), kalamari, halloumi, spanakopita (a fila pastry filled with spinach and feta), chips, and then let each diner choose a main. For us the main will almost always be a chicken souvla, but there is plenty of choice. The drinks also include a range of Greek and Cypriot bottled beers, to take you straight to the islands, such as Mythos and Keo. You can never order too much Greek food, just get on with it and enjoy the ride!

The Price

The Early Bird Menu offers a starter and a main for just £13.95, with a decent selection of dishes. This can be accessed all night on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and between 12pm and 5pm on a Thursday. Starters on the main menu range from £3.95 to £7.95 (the highest priced dishes are big in portion size), with main dishes on average between £13 and £15.
