Bill Shankly – one of the finest football managers to grace the beautiful game, and a man who completely transformed Liverpool Football Club, building the first great side and laying the groundwork for the World-famous team we know today. He was a man full of great quotes, with one of this most famous the line that gave the Bastion Bar & Restaurant (located within the Shankly Hotel on Victoria Street) its name:

"My idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility. I want to build a team that's invincible, so that they have to send a team from bloody Mars to beat us."

The Vibe

The whole Shankly hotel is an incredible idea, with the theme behind the entire place (including the bar and restaurant downstairs) a dedication to the life of the great Liverpool manager. It is a wonderful way to completely immerse yourself in football history and culture, although we’re sure if you’re a blue you won’t want to come anywhere near here (we’ll tell you all about it anyway though!).

There is memorabilia everywhere you look, with items from Shankly’s personal and professional life, and it is hard to keep your eyes on the food when you’re in the restaurant rather than the old photos, the ticket stubs, pennants, and books linked to the great man. It is a wonderful atmosphere whenever you visit, but as you’d expect it is a fantastic place to go during a Liverpool match, and there are often old players invited to special dinners and events to speak about old times. Recently, the hotel has taken to organising big live music events, with famous bands putting on shows, as well as regular live music from local bands.

The Food

As Shankly would have wanted the focus of the food is to promote British produce of the highest quality, with a range of simple options delivered well. It is a gastro-pub vibe, with a lunch menu of lower-cost items in the daytime, and a more expensive A La Carte menu for evening diners. If you pop in during the day for a light bite or lunch, you can choose from the soup of the day with a bread roll, a range of sandwiches (such as ham and cheddar, pastrami, crispy duck, and smoked salmon), fish and chips, a range of salads, Thai green curry, and the famous Shankly Burger and Shankly Scouse. In the evening, starters are fancy, including pressings of ham hock, goats’ cheese and black truffle panna cotta, and bury black pudding scotch egg, whilst mains are dishes like roasted chicken breast, shoulder of lamb, or a range of steaks. There is also a range of sides to accompany your meal.

If you are looking for something a little bit different and treaty, you can also go for afternoon tea at the Bastion Bar and Restaurant, and they also do an amazing Sunday Roast sharing platter for two every week, with a choice of meat (or veggie option) and regular, tasty sides. It is a sight to behold.

The Price

The prices are what you would expect for a good standard of gastro pub fare. The lunchtime deals start at £6 for the soup of the day, with all sandwiches £7.95, and the larger mains between £10.50 and £12.50. The evening meals are pricier, with starters beginning at £7.95, and the main dishes ranging from the roasted chicken breast at £13.95 to the beef sirloin at £22.90. All sides are £3. For the massive roast dinner sharing platter the cost is £40 for two people with a dessert, or for two adult and two children. Afternoon tea is a reasonably priced £19.95 per person.
