Freshly baked bread, every single day of the week. Is there anything better than a fresh loaf? The smell as you crack it open and the delicious taste, as you smother it in salty butter and savour every last bite….hang on, sorry, we were drifting off into a bread dream there for a second. Anyway! Baltic Bakehouse provides the standard by which all other bread in the city should be judged by, and they do some amazing tarts, pastries, donuts, and the UGC (read on to find out more about that one!).

The Vibe

The Baltic Triangle is still a bit of a mystery to some, and if you didn’t know where it was you might struggle at first to find the Baltic Bakehouse, but it’s just off Jamaica Street, down on Bridgewater Street. You’ll see the sandwich board outside (sometimes on its side due to the regular high winds we always get here). It’s an unassuming entrance, like a lot of these new businesses that have taken over old industrial estate premises, but the inside does the job. There are a few tightly packed wooden benches down one side if you want to sit in to eat, fresh bread on display and ready to be picked up on the right-hand wall, and the small counter at the back, packed full with pastries, tarts, and sweet treats. Service is always quick and courteous, and we imagine that it wouldn’t take long for you to get your face known here and your bread and pastries order known before you fully walk through the door.

The Food

The bread is divine, all baked fresh, award-winning, and whatever you choose you’ll be left with that warm feeling inside, and the smell of fresh, tasty bread that stays with you throughout the day. It is truly one of life’s great pleasures. The counter also has a range of tasty treats to suit all palates, with various options depending on when you visit. We’ve had the custard donuts in the past, donuts with a flake attached (very tasty), cruffins, pain au choc that are flaky and moreish, sticky buns, toasted teacakes, tarts and much more. You never know what delights you’ll find when visiting, but it’s always a pleasant experience.

For us though, there is only one thing that we can talk about in depth when it comes to Baltic Bakehouse. This might seem like a bold claim, but they serve the best grilled cheese in the city (maybe even in the country, but we’ll have to travel round and try a whole lot more just to be sure – it’s hard work but someone’s got to do it). It’s made with two slices of the Baltic Wild, and contains cheddar, comté, onions, leeks, all melted together. It is glorious, and there is no way we can do it justice here, just get on down to the Baltic and seek it out as soon as you can.

The Price

You can pre-order or pick up various types of bread, such as baguettes at just under £2, the Baltic Wild at £3.70, and the Wholemeal or White Bloomer at £2.35. For the amazing lunchtime offers, the Ultimate Grilled Cheese is just under a fiver, the soup of the day the same price, and the latest special sandwich £6.50 (this has been a Deli sandwich, a Rueben, and a Roast Lamb, in recent times.
