You might not expect to find one of the best Greek tavernas in the city hidden away on the old dock road, but Bacchus is definitely that. A family-run, authentic Greek restaurant where you are welcomed with a smile and expected to casually dine and sample the best of Hellenic produce and recipes for hours at a time.

The Vibe

An old-style, authentic Greek taverna style, you can tell that Bacchus is run by a family. It’s been here forever, just outside of the limits of the city centre, down by Costco and before you get to the old warehouses on Regent Road. It’s a weird part of Liverpool that is getting busier, but the fact Bacchus has maintained its consistency and popularity in all this time proves it is quality. There aren’t any gimmicks that you might have expected from a Greek place years ago (plate-smashing and the like), instead the focus is on great food, served well. Simplicity in design, and fantastic customer service, just like you’d receive in Greece.

The Food

As with any authentic Greek dining experience, it is all about taking your time and trying out loads of different plates when sharing with a big table. There is plenty to admire on the Bacchus menu, such as the classic Greek salad, halloumi, mussels, octopus, dolmadakia, meatballs, and spanakopita. You can easily share a whole host of appetisers with friends and savour the delicious flavours of Greece. For bigger meals, the souvlaki, moussaka, and stifado are the standouts that we would always head towards. If we’re honest, what we would suggest though is to take on the Mezedes with a partner or friend. This is the best way to get the best out of Greek food, a casual way of dining, where the idea is that you are served between 16-18 dishes slowly over three to four courses, sampling the best of all corners of the menu. It is simply fantastic, and Bacchus offers one of the best Mezedes we’ve had in the UK.

The Price

The fantastic Mezedes Greek Banquet is great value at just £22.50 per person. The appetisers are all priced between £3.50 and £7, with mains coming in between £12.50 and £20. Bacchus also has a brilliant early evening menu, offering diners 2 starters, 2 mains, and a bottle of wine for just £35 between 4.15pm and 6.30pm, Monday to Thursday.
