American Pizza Slice

18 inches of pure heaven. American Pizza Slice is the dream for pizza lovers in the city (and we certainly dream about pizza all day, every day! APS has a smaller shop on Whitechapel that serves pizza by the (large) slice, and a newer site on Bold Street with plenty of seating downstairs, table service upstairs and alcoholic drinks available. They also have a South Road shop in Waterloo to the North of the city, and an amazing delivery service. If you love pizza, you’ll love American Pizza Slice.

The Vibe

The team behind American Pizza Slice fell in love with the classic New York view of pizza – sold by the slice, a casual and laidback service that was very friendly, and over the years they have developed loads of different, and always tasty, combinations for toppings. 

The Whitechapel store is a small, almost kiosk, with a couple of high tables and chairs inside and out, aimed at those passers-by after a quick bite to eat, and the late at night crowds (They are open until late on weekends). The service is fast, fun, and the slices always fresh and laid out in front of your eyes to make you drool as you walk in through the door.

The Bold Street venue wanted to take that relaxed vibe and bring it into a bigger setting, and they’ve certainly succeeded. The downstairs has the open woodfired pizza oven on view behind the counter, and all the glorious pizza slices, garlic bread, and bottles of beer on show in the front. The wooden tables provide plenty of space, with comfy cushions and pizza memorabilia spread throughout. In the summer months the backstairs courtyard makes great use of what would otherwise be dead space, and the upstairs has some large round tables and booths, and table service for those looking to make a night of it. Having the choice to sit in with a beer and a slice is a great idea, and it brings in plenty of people before a night out, as a stop off during a night out, or after a crawl in town. What better way to do anything than eat pizza with it!

The Food

All of the slices on offer come from an 18-inch pizza, which shows you how big the slices are. No matter who we have gone with over the years, or the time of day or state of the party (sober or inebriated), there seems to be a go to order – 2 slices of pizza, one slice of cheesy garlic bread, and a drink. It’s almost the perfect size for any person, and is satisfying. That’s not to say we haven’t been known to go back for more, or order an entire 8-slice special to ourselves for delivery (this is a great idea where you can order as many different toppings as you want, delivered as one big pizza – great for parties with loads of different preferences).

Over the years there have been some truly mesmerising pizza toppings from APS, with our personal favourites (some of which are not currently with us, but we hope they return), the Little Italy meatballs slice, the Fennel Sausage, Halloumi, Chorizo, Brie and Bacon, Spicy Beef, and Quatro Formaggi. To be honest, it was hard for us to not just copy and paste the entire menu it is that good! The cheesy garlic bread is a must-have with every visit too, the melting cheese, gooey, and stretchy, and delightful, we’re in love.

The Price

For a giant and tasty slice of pizza it is just £2.50 per slice, whilst there are some great meal deals of various prices, depending on whether you want a garlic bread and/or a drink, or multiple slices. You’ll see current meal deal offers on the board in each store. For a full 18-inch of any pizza the price is a reasonable £17 – with the 8-slice special, where you can pick loads of different slices to come together, just £18.
