TV & Movies filmed in Liverpool - Part 1
Written by
Super UserLiverpool has a waterfront that stands up to the big screen, including the iconic Pier Head and the Three Graces, it has the beauty of Sefton Park, the majesty of the Georgian Quarter and the history of the Welsh streets and parts of Toxteth that have all been used in film and television over the past 30 years and more. You might be surprised to hear that some of the biggest names in Hollywood have filmed in Liverpool. Here are just a few of the big films we’ve had shot in our fine city!
Fast and Furious 6 (2011)
The action franchise to end all action franchises. As these films have gone on, the action has got bigger, the cars have got faster, the explosions louder. For the 6th film (there’s about 22 of these by now) shooting came to Liverpool. The Birkenhead Tunnel was closed, as were parts of Dale Street to make room for the action.
War of the Worlds (2020)
The latest adaptation of this classic was filmed in some of the most iconic parts of the city over the course of 9 weeks. St George’s Hall was transformed, as was parts of Water Street and Croxteth Park.
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
We joked above about there being 22 Fast and the Furious movies, but there might actually be that many (if not more) films in the Marvel Universe. Back in 2011, the hunky Chris Evans came to Liverpool to film The First Avenger. Stanley Dock was used as a double for Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Peaky Blinders (2013 -)
One of the most popular TV shows on the planet, the Birmingham-based show actually films a lot of the production in Liverpool and Merseyside. The Welsh Streets in Toxteth were used as the street for the homes of the Shelby family, whilst Formby Beach and Port Sunlight village have both been used for emotional, tense scenes in the gripping drama.
Creed (2015)
We were all excited when Rocky came back weren’t we? A brand-new fighter to get behind, the song of Apollo, trained by Rocky Balboa, what’s not to love?! Even better for scouse fans of the boxing underdog franchise, part of the film and the climax fight were shot in Liverpool. Sly Stallone is a massive Everton fan after all, and as well as St George’s Hall promoting the fight in the film, Goodison Park was the venue, with Creed fighting ‘Pretty’ Ricky Conlang (played by Tony Bellew) for the World Light Heavyweight Championship.
51st State (2001)
What better way to finish the list than with a stone-cold classic of scouse cinema, the 51st State? It’s what made Samuel L Jackson fall in love with the city after all. Jackson and Robert Carlyle would shoot all over the city, down at the India Buildings, the Pier Head and even at Anfield, in this crime caper involving an American drug syndicate and a master chemist.
