LEAF is a Bold Street gem that fits perfectly amongst the home-grown creative and independent businesses surrounding it. As well as a tantalising round-the-clock menu, you’ll find art, live music, club nights and endless varieties of loose leaf tea all under one roof. LEAF was founded out of homage to the nation’s favourite drink, and its owners are on a mission to help customers enjoy a lot more than just the average builders’ brew.
Even when the two spacious floors are bustling with foodies, LEAF retains a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. The building’s lofty ceilings and beautiful original features are defined by soft, subtle lighting. Old Victorian-style couches and armchairs are set against reclaimed floorboards, with and benches and long tables that feel worn and loved.
The venue draws people in from all walks of life – the early risers, the night owls and everyone in between. A Friday night here could be spent soaking up some of the best new music at a relaxed gig, then within a matter of hours, you could be sat at the exact same spot savouring a slightly hungover breakfast. Being unpolished and authentic is what makes LEAF the perfect day to night space.
The building itself has a fascinating history, making its unique charm and character even more fitting. During its heyday in the 1890s, the first floor served the well-to-do ladies of Liverpool as a lavish tearoom that went by the name of The Yamen Café. This made it the perfect location for the small independent tea shop to be founded in 2007. Since then, the business has grown to offer over 50 loose leaf teas. And for anyone who’s spoilt for choice, ‘Secret Garden’ and ‘Autumn Fire’ are two award-winning blends that should definitely be first on your list to try.
But what’s tea without a tasty slice of cake to enjoy it with? Thanks to their skilled pastry chef, LEAF has become renowned for its daily selection of freshly baked goodies. Those with a sweet tooth will also want to pay LEAF’s monthly Pudding Club a visit – it’s a sugar-coated paradise, where regulars can indulge in five different courses of dessert.
Other regular events include a monthly vintage fair, open-mic nights on Tuesdays and ‘Spotify Wednesdays’, where complete musical control is bravely handed over to the customers. LEAF works closely with the local community to deliver a diverse program that covers art, music and film. In many ways it has become the life and soul of Bold Street, bringing people together through exciting and varied events.
Both the owners and staff at LEAF have a passion for tea, music and good times, and that’s exactly what you’re guaranteed when you visit there.
